Therapy for Immigrants & First-Generation Adults

Building a life in a new country is its own kind of labor, one that rarely gets named as hard even though it is. I'm Samar Farange, a licensed therapist based in Seattle, and I offer online therapy to immigrants and first-generation adults across Washington state, in English or Farsi.

I work with people who left one place for another — recently or decades ago — and with people raising families here while still carrying ties, obligations, and grief connected to where they came from.

Who this is for

  • Homesickness or grief for a place and life you left behind
  • The exhaustion of navigating systems — healthcare, school, work — that no one explained to you
  • Isolation from being far from the people who used to know you best
  • Guilt about building a life your family back home can't fully share
  • Being the point person for everyone else's paperwork, appointments, and translation
  • Reconciling who you were there with who you're becoming here

What sessions look like

A lot of this work is about naming things that get treated as just logistics — loneliness, loss, the sheer cognitive load of doing everything in a second language or a second system — so they stop operating in the background and start getting real attention. You won't have to explain your culture from scratch before we can get to the actual work.

Do I need to be fluent in English to work with you? +

No — sessions are available in English or Farsi, and we can move between the two if that's more comfortable.

Will I have to explain my culture to you before we can start? +

You won't have to over-explain the basics. I'll ask questions when I need to understand something specific to your situation, but you're not responsible for educating me on the broad strokes.
